Oprah and The Secret

Oprah andThe Secret go hand in hand. The phenomenon that is The Secret really came about because of "the Oprah effect".

When Oprah did her first program about The Secret, with an array of the teachers from the movie, the whole thing really took off, because it hit a nerve with ordinary people right across the world, who might never have otherwise heard of it.

This is due to the power of television and the extraordinary influence that Oprah herself has. But if there hadn't been something extraordinary in what the guests discussed on the program, it would not have got such a huge response from ordinary people. When something goes this big, I believe it has to have a core of truth behind it that really resonates and connects with people. It has to be more than hype.

I remember watching that program and thinking I had never seen such a collection of amazing interviewees in a TV studio at the same time before! Their combined impact was pretty amazing. Even though I had seen the movie and read the book, listening to Oprah tease out some of the ideas and ask some of the questions I wanted to ask, gave me a deeper understanding of the Law of Attraction and how it has affected my own life.

On the show, Oprah talked about those times in life that we all experience, when everything seems to be falling apart. And she has had her fair share of those---like the time she made remarks about mad cow disease and everything she owned was put on the line, when she was sued by the beef industry.

Oprah said that over the years, she has learned during difficult times, to try and connect with the quiet, calm centre of her being. Then she asks herself "What do I need to learn from this?"

And she is so right in putting it like that! Because until we learn whatever lesson life is trying to teach us, through the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in, we cannot move on. We will just be repeating and recreating that same pattern of conflict, until we learn the lesson and deal with difficulty in wise, truthful, enlightened way for the higher good of everything.

Michael Beckwith, who has also seen off some hard times in his life, added a gem to Oprah's remarks----that it helps you learn the lesson and be wise if you try to act as though you were going to be stuck in that situation, or with those people who are giving you grief, for the rest of your life. Then ironically, you free yourself from it to move on to higher things. Oprah's show on The Secret had the highest level of reaction from viewers than any other show in the program's history.

She then did a follow-up show about The Secret with two of The Secret teachers, James Arthur Ray and Michael Beckwith. This show was also instructive and enlightening.

Another lesson I took from watching the follow-up show, was to remember the power of gratitude. Michael Beckwith reminded us of the importance of gratitude:

"The moment you begin to focus on gratitude, you create within yourself, the condition for more things to be grateful for, to come into your life."

Another really important lesson I took from that show was to not define myself by my past. James Arthur Ray said:

“What we tend to do, with our mind, is define ourselves by our physical circumstances. When you look at your current results and say, This is me, the universe says, Your wish is my command. But that’s not YOU. That’s not who you are. It’s who you WERE! It says nothing about who you can become and what you’re capable of.”

Bad things happen to all of us in life and they traumatize us. But the more we define ourselves as the person that that thing happened to, the more we solidify ourselves as a person that bad things happen to. We keep on forcing the badness of the past to continue into our future.

But if we focus on the good things we want and see ourselves in those terms, as the happy, wealthy, successful person we want to be, then that becomes our solid identity that we can make a reality.

I was glad that between the two shows, that Oprah and The Secret teachers clarified something important to the viewers----that the Law of Attraction is not just an airy-fairy notion of day-dreaming about what you would like and then sitting back and expecting it to turn up.

I think a lot of readers of The Secret book could misinterpret the message as meaning that. But on the Oprah show, The Secret teachers emphasised that you have to put the work in. You have to deal with your feelings and subconscious beliefs. And you have to take action. It's not just about positive thinking. It is much more radical than that!

Unfortunately, many people who think the process is more superficial than it really is, give up easily and fail to get results. So let me emphasise, the Law of Attraction is a deep and radical process, that involves changing how you are. It is not just taking five minutes in your day to say affirmations, or send in your cosmic order to the universe.

It is about every moment of your day and how you are and what you are focussing on. It is about whether your predominant focus is positive or negative. It is about the subconscious drives that are at work in your pysche. And it is about acting in harmony with the universe and responding to opportunities that come your way.

It is a very balanced process, a balance between being and action. Being is a female energy, the yin energy of the cosmos. Action is the male energy, the yang energy of the cosmos.

As women, we are good at the being part of the Law of Attraction. We are good at creating in our minds, stories and pictures of the life we would like and thinking nice thoughts about them.

But we are weaker on the male-energy side of the equation. We don't always follow through and keep our focus on what we want. We get distracted and waylaid too easily and we don't see things through to the end.

We also allow the needs of others take us away from focussing on what we need to create for ourselves. But these needs should not be mutually exclusive. As women, we are being true to our nature by caring for our children and relatives and friends. Empathy and nurturing are in our biology. But we need not lose sight of who we are, as individuals, and where we need to get to.

This is not about advocating hard-hearted selfishness. It is about remembering to take care of our true needs, while we love and nurture and take care of those who need us. We can serve others better when we are happy being our authentic selves.
