Kids Making Money

Get your kids making money and give them a headstart in life by teaching them about wealth creation....

One of the most important life skills for kids to learn is how to make money.

Parents, especially mothers, are reluctant to get their children too interested in making money because they are worried about making them 'too money-conscious'. Or they want to shield their kids from the real world of money, and keep them 'innocent and carefree.'

I understand the reasons why some women don't like the idea of kids making money, but I genuinely think it is a mistake. I believe we have a duty to educate our children in all the skills they need to build happy and productive lives. I strongly believe we should encourage our children to have a healthy, balanced interest in money matters.

Next to your children's physical health, their financial health will be the single most important determinant as to whether they can have happy and productive lives. And in fact, studies have repeatedly shown that even physical health improves with wealth, and poverty goes hand-in-hand with ill-health.

Encouraging your kids in making money, does not mean you have to abandon all the important values you want to give them in life. You can still teach them that family and friends are more important than anything and that kindness and generosity are better than greed, or riches at-any-cost. You can still give them a love of literature and the arts and make sure they get the best education.

Kids making money doesn't have to turn them into ruthless mini-Wall Street sharks! On the contrary, any kids I know, whose parents had the foresight to get them interested in making money, grew up to be well-balanced, responsible, caring young adults.

I view money-savviness as a good, practical skill you can teach them, just like teaching kids about cooking! When you get your kids interested in making money, it fosters their sense of self-reliance and independence. It helps them forge a pathway to autonomy and financial mastery in later life. It nurtures their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. And above all, kids making money usually have great fun doing it! It is very empowering for them and the one thing that children realy like having is a little bit of power over their own lives, because they have so little of it. They will love not being dependent on you for the money they need for things they really want!

Here are some ways you can introduce kids to making money:

  • Teach your kids how the stock market works. If you have a broker account, or if you invest online, give them a small allowance and let them instruct you what to buy and sell for them. If you don't invest yourself, you can always do fantasy investing, by using the prices in the financial pages and pretending to buy and sell shares. I know families who have great competitive fun this way and give a prize to the kid who makes the most 'money' within a year.

  • Let your kids open and manage their own bank account. Encourage them to put half their pocket money into either saving, or investing. Teach them about how interest works. A present from the bank!

  • Give them the use of your house resources to be entrepreneurial. Let them take the lemons from your larder to make lemonade for their stall. Let them clear out the junk from your garage and sell it. Let them do paid jobs for you, if they are jobs you might pay others to do anyway, or if it frees you up to spend your time earning even more money.

  • If any of your kids show signs of having green fingers, encourage them to grow some fruit and vegetables for the family and pay them for the produce.

  • Buy them some educational kids money books, such as How 2B Richer Than UR Parents , which was written by a kid for kids. Robert Kiyosaki has also some good child-centered financial products, such as the game 'Cash Flow'.

  • A great way for teenagers who are interested in computers to make money, is to facilitate them in building their own website. I know several teenagers, including my own daughter, who have websites of their own and are making some nice pocket money from them. It beats flipping burgers, or working at a petrol pump and can always be developed into a more substantial business when they are at college. This is something my daughter has done and is very easy for teens who are computer savvy. They may need a bit of help from time to time, but if they are like my daughter, I go to her for help with computer stuff, not the other way around! You can find out more about the system she used on this page.
When your kids are making money, I think it is good to encourage them to give a percentage of it to a worthy cause that they have chosen. This teaches them about giving and sharing and how money can be used to do good in the world, not just to buy more 'things'. They learn that money is an energy, a force that can be used for the higher good of all.

When kids are making money, it gets built into the normal blueprint of their lives. They become used to being around money. They come to understand wealth creation and how dreams and hard work can pay off and result in financial rewards.

When kids are making money from a young age, it makes them comfortable about the power that money gives them. Crucially, it gets them attracting wealth into their lives from childhood onwards, because by introducing them to the idea of making money, as their parent, you create a positive attitude to money in their developing thought-processes. You introduce them to wealth consciousness, rather than poverty consciousness. You kick-start the Law of Attraction and set it to work in their lives. What better start to give to your children?

P.S. I think it is especially important to introduce money skills to young girls. Boys more naturally gravitate towards money in their late teens, or twenties. Some girls never do. And most girls become women who become 'good little earners', but never wealthy women. Give your little girl the gift of independence and autonomy. Give her some money skills. Hey, it's the post feminist era, it's about time! Get your girl kids making money for themselves and they'll always be independent beings.
