Genevieve Behrend
Genevieve Behrend was a remarkable woman. Born in France, in 1881, she encountered the teachings of the most brilliant minds of her time, that of Judge Thomas Troward, who delivered the famous "Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science". He was also author of the masterpiece "The Creative Process in the Individual."
Thomas Troward is probably the father of the self-help industry. He was a pioneer of the 1800's and early 1900's and was very influential on later figures such as Napoleon Hill and Charles Haanel. Troward was adept at explaining complex metaphysical concepts in an understandable way, and Behrend learned this skill from him. It was said that even a child could attend his lectures and understand what was being taught, even though Troward was dealing with the deepest questions about the nature of existence and the complex workings of the universe. Troward's teachings are based on the very same principles that are expounded by some of today's popular self-help gurus, like Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer. His central idea was contained in ancient spiritual teachings. In fact, even Plato taught a similar concept. It is also part of the Kabbalah:- That everything exists in a non-physical plane first. On this level, everything exists outside of space and time. When space and time come into the equation, then the non-physical becomes a reality in the physical plane of existence. How do we bring all that exists outside of space and time into space and time? We encapsulate it within our own thoughts, because we are mortal beings, bound by space and time. Our thoughts then call up these things out of the cosmological soup and make them real in our world. Another very interesting and important point that Troward taught was that the more that we are aware of the power of our thoughts, the more effective we become in manifesting them on the physical plane. "Faith changes reality," he used to say. If you believe something is possible then it is possible. So, women of the 21st century, if you believe you are wealthy, then that belief will become manifest in the real world---in your life! But be aware, that the reverse is also true. If you don't believe it is possible for you ever to become wealthy, then you never will! So, be careful what you think. Be careful what you believe. Be aware of your own subconscious beliefs, which may be working against you. Bring everything into the light of your awareness and examine it, so that your whole being is unified in attracting the wealth that your logical, reasoning mind says it wants. Genevieve Behrend, the chique young Parisienne, became Troward's personal protege, studying his teachings and applying them in her own life. She became a living, breathing expression of Troward's teachings, which can be summed up in a single phrase which today we are very familiar with----the Law of Attraction! Yes, you see The Secret phenomenon really isn't 'new agey' stuff. It's been around a while and has been embraced by some of the most brilliant thinkers and visionaries of the past. Genevieve Behrend continued to explore the relationship between the world of thought and the material world. How mental action has a physical result, or manifestation. How thought creates form. One of today's most successful gurus, Joe Vitale, is a great fan of Genevieve Behrend's work and says it was her book that taught him how to manifest more effectively----by focussing on the essence of what he wanted, rather than on the thing itself. In other words, instead of focussing on the trappings of wealth, focus on the freedom, the peace of mind and independence it would give you----in other words focus on your true heart's desires ---- create a feeling, imagine how it would feel to be wealthy and free of money worry. In imagining it, you actually feel the feeling as though you were already wealthy for that moment---this then attracts the real wealth to become manifiest in your life! This fascinated the young Behrend who saw it as her life's mission to spread the word about what Troward had taught her. Genevieve Behrend travelled the world, giving speeches and became a celebrated teacher in her own right, lecturing across North America for thirty-five years. We tend to think of self-help gurus as a rather modern phenomenon. But they have been with us for a long time, and Genevieve Behrend was one of the earliest in her field. She was lucky to have been born into the era of radio and her speeches were broadcast to her legions of followers, who were captured by her engaging, energetic and direct style. Her own words sum up her philosophy, which teaches the same Law of Attraction that we, 21st century women, have encountered in The Secret. "We all possess more power and greater possibilities than we realize, and visualizing is one of the greatest of these powers. It brings other possibilities to our observation. When we pause to think for a moment, we realize that for a cosmos to exist at all, it must be the outcome of a cosmic mind." Behrend devised her own system of how to apply the Law of Attraction. Her great gift was to make people understand that they didn't have to understand everything on an intellectual level first. You don't have to get all the stuff about quantum physics for the Law of Attraction to work for you. You just have to apply it in your life with whatever understanding you have of it. And when it works, it's all working for you, the quantum physics, the universe, the cosmos, because you are connected to and part of the divine order of things----when you are in harmony with the laws of life, then the whole cosmos is on your side. Whether or not you understand how it all works! Behrend wrote several self-help books which we will be studying in my Money Angels Book club, so make sure to
